Finally got around to watching this movie. Since I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, you’ll have to continue reading after I write this summary.
If you have yet to watch this movie, I say it’s a must see. I’m really impressed with Christian Bale. I’ve always loved his acting, when I first saw him in American Psycho (which happens to be one of my favourite movies of all time – I know I must be crazy right?). I thought it was done very well. Very dark, with a very decent storyline. Everything I envisioned the “Dark Knight” would truly be like.
I have to admit that I’ve never felt as much emotion about any other Batman movie like this one. I thought the characters were very believable, and very well done. The actors and actresses did a great job. And to my surprise, “Commissioner” Gordon was no other than one of my all-time favourite actors, Gary Oldman. That alone made me realize I loved this movie. I was never disappointed with a movie he’s ever appeared in. (at least if there were, I’ve blocked them out.)
The storyline was great. I loved the fact that Liam Neeson was the bad guy. He really does play a great bad guy I think. Although honestly, I think I had a hard time picturing him as a “martial artist”. Even after watching this movie, I guess that I just stereotyped him and never thought of him in a role such as this. A bad guy yes, but someone that could swing and kick like Jackie Chan? No. With that said, I still loved his character.
I was really surprised to see a lot of big names (or some that used to be big names) in the movie. Those such as Rutger Hauer. Man, I haven’t seen a movie with him in ages. I’m sure he’s done a few, but I haven’t seen one lately. And his role was kinda small I thought. Big Tycoon that seemed like he had the best intentions but then didn’t…he just didn’t get much of the story in there. Of course, he was dwarfed by Liam Neeson, as well as the mob boss.
Since I haven’t really been keeping up with the whole story or origins of Batman, I’m not sure how much of the story in Batman Begins conforms to the DC Comics Dark Knight. It seemed good. And it seemed entirely plausible. I just want to say one of the best scenes yet, is the scene where young Bruce Wayne is sitting by his fallen parents. Just sitting there, not knowing what to do. That scene was priceless. In my mind’s eye, it was exactly as how I would have seen it. I loved it. Kudos to the director for getting that scene right on.
Katie Holmes was a pretty good character too. Like I said, I have no idea of the DC Comics version of the origins of Batman, so I don’t know if her character was in the story or if Hollywood invented her to put a love twist into the story. (you know, boy meets girl, boy becomes alter-ego, boy loses girl) I think she did a great job though. I was never really a Katie Holmes fan, even in the days of Dawson’s Creek. But for this movie, I thought she was pretty good. There were a few scenes where I thought she could have done better ( the Arkham Asylum for one ), but all in all I say good job, Katie. Good Job.
I’m kinda glad they didn’t really have a big time criminal (the Joker, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, etc etc) since this was a movie about how Batman began, after all. He didn’t just suddenly go fight crime because the Joker got loose. (although I did like how Lt. Gordon hands Batman the “calling card” of the Joker to him at the end – nice touch guys)
The only thing I can say about this movie is one that me and my friends say when we rate a movie. “I’ll buy it on DVD.”
