05/28/05 – 1.0 Release

Bug Fixes/Changes

- Added Linklist User agent to be sent when RFC 3229 update check.

- Fixed issue with Blogrolling not importing URLs when importing via OPML.

- Fixed Issues with the updated time not being displayed correctly. this should show up correctly now.

- Added ability in the exp:linklist:checkupdated tag to show debugging output. (silent=”false”) this should help those people who are having issues with this tag running superslow, and finding out which sites are slow, so they can deal with those links appropriately.

- Fixed issues with blogs not showing up as updated. This had a lot to do with localization, but after quite a few test runs, it looks to be working properly. Please be sure that you have the exp:linklist:checkupdated tag running on a regular basis. If you don’t, then no sites will ever show up as updated.

TODO File:

- Categories for Links. I’m still fighting myself on this one, if it’s truly necessary.

- Keywords, ala del.icio.us and furl. Actually these will be tags as the term coined by technorati, but I am calling them keywords not to confuse people with EE tags and also to keep with the naming convention started by Andy Crouch with the EE Keywords Plug-in (http://www.culture-makers.com/keywords/). This would come in very handy for those of you who wish to use the Technorati tags within RSS files. That’s the idea anyways. I’m just simply confused about the tag thing myself. :p

- Possible API for the linklist. This will enable you to sync your links with del.icio.us. That’s the idea anyways.

- Member linklists. This will enable members of your site to create their own link page, hosted by your site.

- Submit a Link feature. Members (and/or normal visitors) will be able to submit their link for inclusion in your linklist. This would have them submitting the link, then you will have to approve it before it is actually shown on your linklist. (i.e. pending status.) – I’m actually on the fence about this. Is this really even needed? I’m just not sure really. I see a potential for link spamming, but if the default is set to pending, and you have to approve the link, that shouldn’t be a problem really. Thoughts? I’d like to hear some feedback on this feature.

- Clickthrough counting. This will count how many time someone has clicked through on your link. Again this is one of those that I think would be a good idea, but not sure if it’s needed. (or wanted!) Feedback appreciated.

  1. Firstly thanks for producing such a useful module.

I think you should add to your to do list the ability to export a link list as an OPML. Secondly, I think it would be really nice to have categories for lists. Right now I am maintaining a “link blog” via del.icio.us and I would like to maintain this using the EE link list module but I can’t because there’s no support for tags/keywords. Essentially I would like to replace del.icio.us and maintain all my links using my own service. To do this I have to have two things:

    1. The ability for people to copy my link list (achievable by having an export to OPML feature) After all the power of del.icio.us really lies in the ability to share links.

    2. The ability to categorise my links using tags or keywords – this could also be integrated with the keywords module so that if somebody clicks on a category from my link list or blog it pulls up all related entries on my blog for that keyword and I’m sure it would be nice to have related entries from other blogs. I guess you could also tie it in with your tag cloud as well.

What I would like to see is a situation that the bookmarklet allows me to do exactly what del.icio.us does i.e.

    1.)Bookmark a link

    2.)Bookmark the link description

    3.)Add some extended text

4.)Add tags (right now link list module doesn’t do this)

Would like to know your thoughts!!

I’d love the categories and link counting..  I’d be happy with tags instead of categories, but I can see a use for both.

  3. yoshi says:

Yeah, look for keywords aka tags in the next version. I’m still on the edge about categories, because in essence each link list is a category really, and keywords/tags will separate them out. Of course, the use of keywords/tags will be limited in scope to your own linklist. it won’t be global like delicious. that would be beyond my scope right now hehe.

  4. Lisa says:

As long as they can be passed into a segment, then I can use ‘em.  Preferably segment 3 ;) That way I can combine stuffs.

    Thanks ;)

  5. yoshi says:

Well, the method I’m working on right now will have the linklist work much like the weblog tag where it will try to parse the URL. (dynamic=”on”) What I’m thinking it will look for is something like /index.php/weblog/links/tag/keyword and try to take that tag/keyword and return only the links for that tag. that’s the idea at least. in that way it will work sort of like (and i mean sort of in the broadest way) del.ico.us.

Of course, this could all change in the future when I actually implement this. :) We’ll see!

    Bug Report:

Discover RSS says “Invalid Link ID”

    LinkList v. 1.0

  7. yoshi says:

Is this happening in the list of links or does it happen when you try to discover the RSS on an individual link?

    I can’t seem to reproduce this. :/

  8. Jon says:

    In my list of links…

  9. Jon says:

    admin.php?S=0&C=modules&M=linklist&P=post_link

that is the business end of the url…

  10. Jon says:

    Slap Forehead DOH! Voice:

It does help if one would check mark some links before pressing the ‘Discover RSS’ link.

No bug, but thanks Yoshi for fixing the error code so idiots like me don’t go running off making false bug reports!

    :)
