Excuse me, I MUST turn on GEEK mode here:
So obviously Earthlink blocks port 25 on their dial-up (including DSL, cable etc). What does this mean to everyone? Not much really except for people who are trying to send and receive mail for their domain that is not hosted by Earthlink.
It wouldn’t be so bad if the Earthlink techs were aware of this problem. Either A) They don’t know that port 25 is blocked, or B) They are told not say that they are blocking. I can understand both ways.
I just want to say that I’m not bashing Earthlink Tech folks. I still think that Earthlink has the best tech support, since I was once an Earthlink Tech-guy.
Scenario A is believable. Why? Mainly because the poor techs are not always told everything. Even then, the news could have been spread through the great number of emails that they receive. Easily overlooked.
Scenario B is also believable. Earthlink has always been one to know that you get total unrestricted access. You don’t want to spoil that by saying you are now blocking port 25. It’s really insignificant in my opinion. Blocking port 25 is a common practice. I encourage it for any ISP. Because of the numerous amounts of spam, this is a logical choice.
So, I’m thinking that for the most part, it’s scenario A. Because why wouldn’t you want to tell the customers that you’re blocking port 25 with reasons such as that? The only people who will get furious at this would be the people who are actually spamming. Anything to kill all spammers is a good thing.
So if you’re having problems sending mail to someone, and you’re not using your own ISP’s mail servers… It might not be your hosting service. It might very well be your ISP!
Oh, and btw, if you *still* don’t believe that earthlink is blocking port 25 and would like to hear it from them, here you go:

My case is rested.
